This website provides information about the research, consulting, publishing and other activities by Walter Klöpffer, born and educated in Graz, Austria.

After his studies of chemistry and his PhD at the Karl-Franzens-University in Graz, he joined the Battelle Institut e.V. Frankfurt, Germany (a daughter company of Battelle Memorial Institute, Columbus, Ohio) in 1964. He has been living in Frankfurt/M since that time. Since 1975 he is a professor for Physical Chemistry at the Johannes-Gutenberg- University in Mainz. In 1995, three years after joining C.A.U. GmbH in Dreieich, he was appointed as editor-in-chief of "The International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment”, a newly founded periodical by ecomed publishers. He acted as editor-in-chief until 2016, the last 4 years together with Mary Ann Curran (USA). Since January 2017 he acts as subject editor for "Critical Review and LCA Standards". 

After retirement in June 2003 he started as a free consultant for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and mainly performs "critical reviews" according to ISO 14040:2006 and 14044:2006. In addition to editing the LCA journal, since 2008 with Springer publishers, he has been writing books on environmental chemicals and Life Cycle Assessment. All these activities grew out of professional duties at Battelle, C.A.U. and the lectures given at the University of Mainz. An important issue apart is the extension of LCA to "Life Cycle Sustainability Assessmenmt (LCSA)".

A further editorial project (with Springer) consists in a book series "LCA Compendium - The Complete World of Life Cycle Assessment" (Editors-in-chief: Walter Klöpffer and Mary Ann Curran).
