Regular lectures (classes) at the University of Mainz started in autumn 1975 after finishing the habilitation procedure in April of that year. The first phase included lectures on special spectroscopic topics, e.g. triplet states, excitons, excimers and exciplexes etc. for graduate students. In a second phase, somewhat more general topics as polymer spectroscopy and photochemistry (with an emphasis on photophysical primary processes) were presented. In the second half of the 80´s, recently gained experience on transfer and degradation processes of chemicals in the environment was used for lecturing on these themes. Finally, in the 90´s, a fourth phase of lectures included topics of interest also for other (non-chemical) disciplines: Life Cycle Assessment ("Ökobilanz") and Substance Flow Analysis.
All lectures have been "original" in a sense that research papers and monographs - mixed here and there with own research results - rather than text books were used for preparing the scripts. The titles of the lectures are included in the attached "List of Presentations and Lectures" together with the lectures helt at conferences and at other occasions.
On the basis of lecture scripts two books were written:
W. Klöpffer: "Introduction to Polymer Spectroscopy ", Vol. 7 of the series Polymers, Properties and Applications, ISBN 3-540-12850-6 Springer, Berlin-Heidelberg-New York (1984).
W. Klöpffer: "Verhalten und Abbau von Umweltchemikalien. Physikalisch-chemische Grundlagen". ISBN 3-609-65120-2. Reihe angewandter Umweltschutz. ecomed Verlag, Landsberg/Lech: 1996
