Editorial duties started with appointments to the board of editors of "Umweltwissenschaften und Schadstoff- Forschung (UWSF)" and "Environmental Science and Pollution Research (ESPR)", both edited by Otto Hutzinger, University of Bayreuth (editor-in-chief) and Almut Heinrich (publisher editor) at ecomed, Landsberg/Lech, Bavaria. The first issue of "The International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment" appeared in December 1995. This journal came about by an initiative of Almut Heinrich who invited Walter Klöpffer to act as editor-in-chief and has been acting as the publisher editor - in addition to her other duties - since the beginning. The journal, which is still the only one entirely devoted to LCA, has now an editorial board of more than 40 international LCA experts from academia, industry, consultancy and governmental institutions. All contributions to the printed journal are also available online as PDF-files. The articles published in the journal comprise peer-reviewed papers on LCA - methodology and case studies. In addition, editorials, commentary papers, book reviews and conference reports are included in each of the six issues per year. The "Int J LCA" has been included into the ISI (Institute of Scientific Information) services starting with Volume 6 (1) 2001: Science Citation Index, ISI Alerting Services and Current Contents/Agriculture, Biology, and Environmental Sciences. The journal is complemented by the book series "LCA Documents" (edited by W. Klöpffer and O. Hutzinger) and by the Life Cycle Management (LCM) section of the electronic journal "Gate to Environmental and Health Science (EHS)".
